Obituary

Yetta R. Kalika, nee Cohen, 87, beloved wife of the late Michael; loving mother of Sandra (David) Schusteff and Howard (Becky) Kalika; cherished grandmother of Noah (Alison) Schusteff, Lia (Steven) Sutton, Eli, Jacob, Luca and Sophia Kalika; adored great grandmother of James Henry Sutton and Ethan Myles Schusteff; dear sister of the late Seymour Cohen and Thelma Skaletsky.

Yetta’s life story consisted of many chapters entitled “Daughter”, “Sister”, “Wife”, “Friend”, “Community Activist” and “Home Decorator” in which her love for antiques and crafting rooms with character led her grandchildren to call her house “Grandma’s museum”. However, the chapter Yetta cherished most was that of “Mother”. She lived for her children and never stopped caring or worrying about them, even into their adulthood. Blessed with grandchildren and recently, great- grandchildren, Yetta made room in her heart for them all, enjoying hearing about their latest “chaindles”, viewing their photographs, and loving them anew. Yetta’s holiday dinners were legendary, as was her gefilte fish recipe which she graciously shared with her son-in-law who carried on the holiday cooking tradition when she was no longer able to do so. To her family, Yetta was known as the “Unsinkable Molly Brown”, never taking “no” for an answer, tenaciously standing up for what she felt was right, bouncing back resiliently from illnesses which would have felled anyone else, unwilling to accept that she could no longer be who she once was. Her passing leaves an emptiness in her family which will never be filled. They are grateful to the staff at Avantara of Long Grove for Yetta’s care and comfort over the past two years, especially her nurses Rebecca, Sam, Adelma and Slavicka, CNAs Elizabeth and Daniel (whom Yetta affectionately called Bruno because “he looks like a Bruno”) and many others.
